Week of Nov. 29, 2017
Douglas Paul Herr passed away at his home in Naples, Florida, surrounded by his loving family on Nov. 16 due to complications of Lewy Body Dementia. Doug was born July 1, 1935 in Wishek, the only child of Gideon and Madeline Herr. He completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting with Distinguished Honors from the University of Minnesota. Doug met Grace Forss in Chicago on a blind date arranged by friends. They married six months later on Aug. 30, 1958 and recently celebrated 59 years together. The Herrs lived in Evanston, Rolling Meadows, and then Arlington Heights in Illinois, where Doug was a CPA at Arthur Andersen & Company. They were blessed with 4 children. In 1969, the family moved to Danville, Illinois, where Doug became the CFO of Hurletron, then Altair Corporation.

Week of Nov. 22, 2017
The funeral service for Calvin E. Hochhalter, 89, Wishek,was held Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at Faith Community Church, Wishek. He died Nov. 13 at Wishek Living Center. Calvin Hochhalter, son of Emanuel and Maria Magdalena (Ketterling) Hochhalter, was born March 14, 1928 on the family farm, 4 miles west of Wishek. Calvin attended Salem School #1, four miles west of Wishek. He worked on the family farm until 1954, at which time he took over the farm. On Oct. 10, 1954, Calvin married Verna Wanner in Wishek. They farmed until 1978. Calvin started working for Russ Dohn at the Mobil gas station, as a station attendant and then as a bulk truck driver for Sinclair. They moved into Wishek in 1992.

The funeral service for Floyd Brosy, 76, Wishek, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, at Faith Community Church (formerly United Church of Christ), Wishek. Floyd died Oct. 28 at CHI-St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Floyd Brosy, son of Jacob Jr. and Lydia (Ketterling) Brosy, was born July 27, 1941 on the family farm, 4 miles west of Wishek. He attended school in Wishek and graduated from Wishek High School in 1960. Floyd was a lifelong resident of Wishek. He began farming on his own after high school, while driving semi part-time. He purchased the family farm in the early 1960s. On Sept. 1, 1979, Floyd married Sheila Orth at United Church of Christ in Wishek. They were blessed with two daughters, Kendra and Jill ... Doris Jean Schock, 79, Bismarck, passed peacefully the morning of Oct. 25, 2017 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Services celebrating her life were held Oct. 31 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Doris was born Feb. 3, 1936, in Wishek, to Gottliebe and Mary Walth. She was raised on a farm, southeast of Wishek. She graduated from Wishek High School in 1955. Doris married Emil Schock from Burnstad on Oct. 21, 1956 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek. After marriage, they moved to the Schock farm in Burnstad. They farmed from 1956-62 and then moved to Wishek ... The funeral for Hertha Wiest, 98, Wishek, was held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek. Hertha died Oct. 25 at Wishek Living Center. Hertha was born on March 3, 1919 to Jacob and Eva (Wolff) Wiest. She grew up on the family farm in rural McIntosh County. Hertha was baptized April 1, 1919 and confirmed June 18, 1933 at St. Andrew's Church. Hertha married Gottlieb Wiest on May 24, 1938 at the home of the bride’s parents. After their marriage, the couple farmed, northwest of Venturia, until 1971, when they moved into Wishek.

Week of Sept. 13, 2017
Dr. Amy Jean Smittle, 48, Springfield, Ohio, passed away Dpeacefully in her sleep the morning of Sept. 2, 2017. Amy was a graduate of Kenton Ridge High School. Amy attended Kent State University and was accepted into the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine accelerated program. She graduated from The University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. At the age of 4, Amy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This disease would shape who she become later in life. From a very young age, Amy always wanted to be a doctor. She practiced family medicine in many small towns including Norwalk, Ohio, Dickinson, North Dakota and Wishek. Sadly, in 2011, Amy suffered a diabetic coma that ended her medical career. She made a miraculous, but not complete recovery that allowed her to return home to the loving arms of her family ... The funeral for Arlene Jean Buchholz, 82, Lehr, was held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, at Zion United Methodist Church, Lehr. She died Aug. 29 at Wishek Hospital. Arlene Entzi, daughter of Reinhold and Rose (Ketterling) Entzi, was born Aug. 20, 1935 at the family homestead, located in Logan County. She attended rural school. Arlene married Ralph Buchholz on May 8, 1955 in Lehr. They made their home northeast of Lehr, where they farmed. Arlene worked occasionally at the Grenz General Store. Arlene was an excellent housewife and mother — she was notorious for her rhubarb pie, among many other baking and cooking dishes. Arlene was the definition of an excellent Grandma; her grandchildren were her world. Arlene had many friends and liked to visit.

he memorial service for Mildred Frances Weber, 83, Wishek, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at Dahlstrom Funeral Home Chapel, Wishek. Mildred was called home to her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at Wishek Living Center. Mildred “Millie” Weber was born on Oct. 6, 1933 in Eureka, South Dakota, to Emanuel and Martha (Schilling) Benkendorf. As a young child, she enjoyed spending time outdoors with her siblings on the family farm, south of Wishek ... A Celebration of Life for Max Albert Wishek Jr., 91, of Ashley, was held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at Carlsen Funeral Home in Ashley. Rev. Linda J. Schauer officiated. A private family burial was at Ashley City Cemetery. Max died Sept. 13 at Ashley Medical Center. Max Albert Wishek Jr., son of Max A. Sr. and Viola (Hezel) Wishek was born Sept. 7, 1926 at Aberdeen. He attended Ashley Public School through the 10th grade. In 1941, he enrolled in Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, Minnesota, and graduated in 1943 at the rank of corporal.
