Summer sizzle

There will be a hot time in the old town this weekend as Ashley hosts one of the community’s premier events, Sizzling Summer Days, with the Hot Rods and Heritage Car Show.

The annual event is hosted by members of the Ashley Sizzling Summer Days Committee.

The three-day celebration begins Friday at 1 p.m. with the Ashley Business Challenge Golf Tournaments on one of the region’s most popular 9-hole golf courses at the Ashley Country Club. For more information, call 471-1639.

Ashley Medical Center’s Fundraiser Meal will offer an opportunity to chow down for a good cause (free will donation) at the Heritage Center located on the east edge of Ashley. They’ll be serving chicken on a stick, coleslaw and fruit-ka-bobs from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with musical entertainment taking place on site from 6 to 6:45 p.m. by singer Cassie Boelke.

All events except those involving the Ashley Country Club, will be held under the big tent at the Heritage Center, a showpiece of Americana with a local flavor—vintage buildings and farm equipment are on display on site.

Hypnotist Jared Sherlock and his show called “Mind Games” is the early headliner from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Blackout Bingo follows the show at 8:15 p.m.

The traditional country band, Backstage Pass, will cap the first of three days worth of events with music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Ashley Country Club will be hosting a breakfast at their newly remodeled clubhouse from 7:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Saturday is the biggest day and features vintage cars in a parade at 11 a.m. Classic vehicles will be parked at the Heritage Center. No prior registration is necessary. The car show is sponsored by the Grenade Launchers Car Club.

One of the most popular events of the festivities is a team scavenger hunt sponsored by the Ashley Chamber of Commerce. It starts at noon. Contestants can register at McIntosh County Bank.

There will be a kid’s carnival with face painting and a photo booth at the Heritage Center from noon to 4 p.m. It’s another Ashley Chamber-sponsored event.

You can put some oomp in your pa-pa with the Larry Olson Polka Band from 1:00 to 4 p.m. And you won’t want to miss the McIntosh County Historical Society’s traditional ice cream social from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Let the games begin at 4 p.m. with races and a good old fashioned kuchen eating contest.

The day ends with the rock sounds of the Randy James Band and the modern country stylings of Redline. There will be food vendors and beer garden on site.

A community church service will be held Sunday at 11:00 a.m. with the always popular deep fried turkey dinner following at noon.

Check a poster or the ad in this newspaper for a complete schedule of events.
